Semiconductors power almost everything around us, from smartphones and laptops to cars, healthcare systems, and critical national infrastructure.
Despite their central role in underpinning modern life, semiconductors are often invisible to the public, with their existence, and their importance unclear outside of academic and industry specialists.
To help begin to bridge that gap, eFutures has launched a short animated video explaining the fundamentals of semiconductors in a clear and accessible way.
Our video gives an overview of what semiconductors are and why they are so essential to the technologies we rely on every day.
At their core, semiconductors are materials that can be engineered to control the flow of electricity. This unique property allows them to act as the building blocks of electronic devices, enabling everything from simple circuits to advanced computing systems. Without them, the digital world as we know it would not exist.
The growing importance of semiconductors is also reflected in news headlines and political summits globally, addressing concerns around semiconductor supply chains, national technological sovereignty, and economic resilience. Countries around the world, including the UK, have recognised the need to invest more in semiconductor research, innovation, and manufacturing capabilities.
As part of this landscape, improving the public’s awareness and understanding of semiconductors is key, not least in addressing the skills gap and encouraging more people into semiconductor-related careers.
Building a strong national ecosystem requires technical expertise, but it also requires a shared understanding and shared goals across researchers, industry, policymakers, and the wider public.
This new video forms part of eFutures’ ongoing efforts to support the semiconductor conversation in Europe.
