Sustainability & Net Zero

The eFutures Network has pioneered the focus on sustainable electronics in the UK, starting with a special 2021-22 series of events led by international experts.

Through the lens of greener processes, novel materials, energy-efficiency,  and circular design, our events aim to raise the profile of greener and greening electronic systems as well as drive innovation in lower power computing, green semiconductors, and clean energy.

We believe that innovation and sustainability must go hand in hand, shaping a future for all that is not simply technologically advanced but is actively environmentally conscious and responsible, offering a better outlook for all – a future that improves and protects planetary health.

Harnessing Collaboration

The move to green modes of transport, like hydrogen powered buses, carbon-neutral ships, and electronic planes, needs advanced electronics.

The eFutures Network brings together UK researchers to develop electronic systems that drive decarbonisation.

Our researchers are bringing lab innovations into our daily life, and their research is accelerating the UK’s path to net zero.

Net Zero Conference

The 2024 eFutures Conference was themed on “Emerging Technologies for Net Zero.” Held at Belfast’s Ulster Museum, the conference brought together international experts from several disciplines to discuss ways electronic systems are connected to net zero.

The conference showcased research and developed collaboration commitments from our community to not only better understanding climate change (and the urgent relevance of it to our own areas of R&D) but actively adapting and innovating research approaches and outputs.

Links were also established between researchers to kick start new funded initiatives in this area, including a successful (March 2025) Marie Curie Doctoral Network.

Sustainable Societies conference in Liverpool (September 2022)

The 2022 eFutures Conference explored  Electronic Systems for Sustainable Societies.

Held at the Museum of Liverpool in England, a series of short presentations, panel sessions and workshops tackled current and emerging challenges for sustainable electronics, circular economies, and green technologies.
