Semiconductor Future UK R&D

eFutures is leading a major strategic foresight study on the future of semiconductor technology, funded by UKRI.

Background

In May 2023, the UK announced a £1 billion strategy to bolster its semiconductor sector.

This strategic investment in the semiconductor industry aims to enhance national security, grow the UK economy, deliver more skilled jobs and empower the digital, AI, and green energy revolutions.

Supporting domestic semiconductor research will enable the UK to maintain a competitive edge in emerging technologies.

What are Semiconductors?

Semiconductors are critical components in a wide range of applications including automotive, communications, computing, defence, home appliances, and mobile phones and tablets.

They are ubiquitous and they underpin and enable all our modern technology.

Some people call semiconductors “chips” – for example, the USA has a Chips Act, and European funding is clustered around an initiative called Chips-JU.

Semiconductor Recommendations

Whilst creating our Semiconductor Research & Development: The UK Landscape Report, we provided several recommendations co-created with an expert Advisory Group, informed by the analysis of the novel evidence base established during this project.

If implemented at quality and pace at a national level, the below recommendations would grow the UK economy and significantly boost national security and resilience; converting the UK’s R&D excellence into scalable, sustainable technology, with commercial outcomes.

Please see our videos below to showcase just some of the recommendations decided upon.

The eFutures’ project

eFutures is leading a comprehensive study on the Future of Semiconductor R&D.

Funded by UKRI, with the UK’s Department for Science, Innovation & Technology as the primary stakeholder, this initiative seeks to assess current semiconductor capabilities and chart a strategic roadmap for future growth.

The study will shape the future of UK’s semiconductor R&D. It will focus on:

The study will provide expert recommendations to the Department for Science, Innovation & Technology; co-created with an Advisory Board.

It also aims, through the research process, including via field research and co-creation with participants, to foster a cohesive and collaborative UK semiconductor community.
